Keep Austin Weird… and Reading

Everything is bigger in Texas… the music, the food… the bookstores.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places, but nowhere is quite like Austin, Texas.

Its inability to be contained in a little box, with easy descriptors is emblematic of not only its location in the state, but the country as well. Austin is nestled not only in the middle of the Lone Star State, but of the nation.

When you go to Austin, you are lucky enough to see this fusion of American culture in many different areas, but particularly the food. Like most of the state, Austin has phenomenal BBQ, but unlike the rest, they can claim to have the BEST IN THE WORLD at Franklin Barbecue. Or, if delicious pancakes and TexMex are more your speed, head over to Kerbey Lane Cafe (I will forever compare all portobello mushroom sandwiches to the one I had there many moons ago).

Once you’ve had your fill of delicious food, be sure to head on over to BookPeople! BookPeople has been the foremost independent bookstore in Texas since they opened their doors in 1970. Whether you’re looking for your favorite bestseller or niche writer, you’ll likely find what your looking for at their expansive downtown store. Once you’ve made the hard decision of what book (or five) to go home with, be sure to pick up one of my bookmarks to hold your place.

Keep the adventure alive by ending your day of fun and good eats by catching a flick at Alamo Drafthouse!
