Zaneb worked as the cook during my residency at Green Olive Arts in Morocco. She was a lovely woman, who was very skilled at Fesian embroidery. This type of embroidery, which is displayed in museums across Marrakech, has the same appearance on both sides of the cloth. It is very graphic, symmetrical and exceedingly difficult to master. We laughed about my efforts to learn this skill quickly… because I thought would be easy! While that was certainly not the case, we had fun and it was nice to spend some down time with her.
All my mixed media pieces are created intuitively, meaning I start with no plan, and end up somewhere unintended.
“Zanab Embroiders” part of the Before, During & After Series created around my 2016 Art Residency in Tetouan, Morocco, and shown at my solo show at First Street Gallery & Framing in Encinitas, CA in March 2017.
