Leyachi the leathersmith! I got to work with Leyachi on three tote bags as part of my final project during my art residency in Morocco. He has been working for the shop owner since he was nine years old. Now a married man with a family to support, Leyachi manages the heavy workload of stamping, sewing and creating fine leather goods for the surrounding shops in the old “medina” of Tetouan. We worked collaboratively to create three unique totes. The one he is working on in this artwork, was all leather with monotype printing that I created.
All my mixed media pieces are created intuitively, meaning I start with no plan, and end up somewhere unintended.
“Leyachi Leather Crafts” is part of the Before, During & After Series created around my 2016 Art Residency in Tetouan, Morocco, and shown at my solo show at First Street Gallery & Framing in Encinitas, CA in March 2017.
